1 in 9 girls will develop breast cancer at some point in their lifetime – so chances are someone you know will be affected by this disease in the future. And don’t forget: while rare, men can get breast cancer too, but girls are 100x more at risk.
There’s no known single cause of breast cancer – but we do know that certain factors (likely in combination) can increase the chances of developing the disease.
Women can’t change some factors that increase their chances of breast cancer:
But there are other risk factors that are controllable, including:
Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke | The chemicals in cigarette smoke can actually increase girls’ risk of breast cancer at a younger age. |
---|---|
Diet | A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of breast cancer |
Physical Activity | Keeping active helps maintain a healthy weight and reduces the risk of breast cancer. |
Alcohol Intake | Avoiding alcohol reduces the risk of breast cancer. |
Respect the girls around you by not exposing them to second-hand smoke!
